Winner Vickie Darrell of Dunn in North Carolina bought a $30 scratch-off ticket on Saturday last week.

After going home, she decided to call up her daughter, and while on the phone, she found out that she had just won $100,000 from the lottery! Darrell did not hesitate about what to do next and told her daughter that she was splitting the reward with her.

Lottery Winner Thinks Her Winning Ticket Is a Blessing – Can’t Believe It

The two appeared at the North Carolina Lottery headquarters for the customary big-check award ceremony, a photo-op, and, of course, a short interview. Darrell is still surprised by what happened, though.

“For this to happen while I was on the phone with her – I can’t even explain what this means to me. I am still trying to believe it,” Darrell said, still processing her six-figure win and giving it even more meaning because it happened while on the phone with her daughter.

Darrell’s daughter was happy for her mom at once, but she was also a bit skeptical at first. She asked her mother if she was seeing the right number of zeros. After checking, Darrell could confirm indeed. The win was scored on the Supreme 7s lottery game and bought by Valero on West Cumberland Street in Dunn.

“This is a blessing,” Darrell explained, arguing that the money was indeed much needed by the family. Darrell also opted for the lump sum payout, which reduced her net prize to $71,758 after all taxes had been applied.

Darrell is splitting the money with her family and helping out her daughter first. This is not the only story recently about a mother winning big from the lottery only to share the money with her family and daughter.

A Gloucester woman in Virginia also won a similar prize – $100,000, and while her name was not released like the case of Darrell, the winner confirmed that she would be splitting her money with her two daughters as well.

Someone in Pennsylvania Wins $2M from Cash 5 Game, Still Anonymous https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/someone-in-pennsylvania-wins-2m-from-cash-5-game-still-anonymous/ https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/someone-in-pennsylvania-wins-2m-from-cash-5-game-still-anonymous/#respond Wed, 13 Aug 2025 06:44:33 +0000 https://www.gamblingnews.com/?p=164224 A ticket on Monday, August 11, won $2,019,939.50 from the Cash 5 lottery game, the Pennsylvania Lottery revealed this week. The player used the Quick Cash option to pick the numbers, resulting in the following winning combination: 5-12-19-29-39.

Anonymous Winner Yet to Claim $2M Prize of a Lifetime

The ticket was bought at a GIANT Food Store at 4655 Perkiomen Ave., Reading, and the property itself will also scoop up a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. The winner, though, has not been identified.

Monday also saw a wave of players winning prizes from Cash 5 with Quick Cash tickets, some 37,200 tickets in total. The Pennsylvania Lottery has issued a reminder to anyone who may have bought a ticket to double-check and see if theirs is among the 37,200 winning tickets on that draw.

The odds of winning the grand prize are not too bad, with players only asked to match five exact numbers. The Pennsylvania Lottery is particularly keen to find out who the person winning the $2,019,935.50 reward is.

The person would have two options to claim their reward – either take a lump sum, which would cut around 40%-60% of their total win because of federal and state taxes. The less popular option is an annuity, which will save on taxes, but split the total over more than a decade of payouts.

The Pennsylvania Lottery is habitually minting new millionaires and big-time winners, with the state grabbing headlines often.

Man Wins $240K from Queen of Hearts Lottery Drawing https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/man-wins-250k-from-queen-of-hearts-lottery-drawing/ https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/man-wins-250k-from-queen-of-hearts-lottery-drawing/#respond Wed, 13 Aug 2025 06:19:37 +0000 https://www.gamblingnews.com/?p=164221 Winning jackpots often feels great, and for a good reason, too. This is precisely the sentiment that Tyler Fraley experienced when he tried his hand at the Little Lake American Legion’s Queen of Hearts jackpot drawing and ended up winning $240,000.

First Time Queen of Hearts Drawing Leads to $240K Jackpot

Participating in the 51st lottery drawing at Post 349 in Little Lake, Fraley found himself in possession of the winning ticket. The money is automatically split with the Legion, with each taking $123,096 after the draw.

Commenting on the win, American Legion Post 349 commander Dale Schoenabauer has welcomed the news and said the Legion was indeed looking for something out of this situation as well!

Schoenbauer has said that the post needs a new boiler, as the current one was “like 100 years old” or at least too old to be useful.

“Earlier this year, the wind blew our sign apart out there. We’re gonna buy a new scrolling sign. After that, maybe new floors in the big hall,” he recalled. This is the first time the Queen of Hearts drawing was done at Post 349.

California Lottery Obtains Global RG Certification https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/california-lottery-obtains-global-rg-certification/ https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/california-lottery-obtains-global-rg-certification/#respond Wed, 13 Aug 2025 06:02:06 +0000 https://www.gamblingnews.com/?p=164218 The Californian Lottery has announced that it has obtained the highest possible international accreditation given to a lottery operator for its responsible gambling commitments and strategy.

California’s Lottery Gains Highest RG Accreditation

The award was handed down to the lottery by the World Lottery Association or WLA, which has distinguished the California Lottery as a Level Four entity, part of the WLA Responsible Gaming Framework.

This accreditation is subject to reassessment every several years, with the current award lasting through August 2028, when the WLA will have to once again go through the available data and information to determine if the recipient has maintained its best practices that distinguished it for the award for the first time.

The California Lottery is also the first US-based lottery to have achieved the WLA’s Level Four distinction, establishing itself as the most forward-thinking and impactful lottery operator in the nation when it comes to responsible gambling practices.

California Lottery Director Harjinder K. Shergill Chima welcomed the news and what it meant for the operator of lottery products, as well as its players.

“Our World Lottery Association certifications reflect our unwavering commitment to responsible gaming and player protection. It is a commitment California’s public schools count on so we can provide supplemental funds to support students across our state.”

California Lottery Director Harjinder K. Shergill Chima

With the California Lottery playing a huge part in backing local initiatives, including the state’s public schools, from kindergarten to community college, as well as the California State University and University of California, the operator has played a key role in helping advance meaningful and impactful initiatives.

The Lottery has habitually minted jackpot winners, with a recent win awarding $4.6 million to one lucky player after they missed the Mega Millions jackpot earlier this week.

The form of Puebla is almost the exact opposite.

The Mexican team did do okay in the Leagues Cup (two wins and one loss), but then got obliterated by Tigres UANL 7:0 in the Mexican Liga MX.

Oddsmakers Expect Seattle Sounders to Get the Job Done Easily

The Seattle Sounders started their 2025 Leagues Cup campaign with a demolition job against Cruz Azul – they won that game 7:0.

Next, they beat Santos Laguna 2:1, followed by a win over Club Tijuana by the same scoreline. Then, when the 2025 MLS returned, they destroyed the Los Angeles Galaxy on the road 4:0.

Obviously, they’ve been in amazing form throughout the summer. Their biggest strength is their team spirit, along with the fact that they have a very long bench. This team is strong in practically every area, with at least two good players for every position on the field.

What they don’t have is a superstar who can win matches on their own. Seattle’s players aren’t used to big games, but on the bright side for them, neither are those playing for Puebla.

Can Puebla Upset the Leagues Cup Odds?

Puebla is the least valuable team in the Mexican Liga MX, according to Transfermarkt, with a roster value of under $25 million. The value of Seattle’s squad is almost three times bigger.

Another problem for Puebla is that these guys seem to be completely out of form. They did start the 2025 Leagues Cup with an upset 3:0 win over New York City FC. They were +330 underdogs ahead of that game.

Then, however, they lost to the Columbus Crew 3:1, which was expected. In the first round of the knockout phase, they upset the odds again. This time, they beat CF Montreal 2:1, a Canadian team that was seen as a -145 favorite.

Against Seattle, Puebla’s odds are +550, suggesting that they’re gonna get thrashed at Lumen Field. We think that the main reason for this is that on August 8, they got obliterated by Tigres UANL 7:0.

Seattle Sounders vs. Puebla Prediction

The Sounders aren’t the best team in America, but they’re levels above Puebla. Their form is good, and they need to make it count. We think they will – our prediction is that they’re gonna dominate the August 10 game and get a comfortable win.

Can they beat another American team?

The team in question is Orlando City, which started its Leagues Cup campaign with a loss by penalties (after 1:1 in regulation) to UNAM Pumas but then went on to beat Atlas (3:1) and Necaxa (5:1). And on their return to the MLS, they destroyed their Florida-based rivals, Inter Miami, 4:1.

Reasons Why Toluca are Odds-On Favorites to Win on August 20

The No. 1 reason why Deportivo Toluca F.C. are favored to beat Orlando City is that this team is the winner of the 2024-25 Mexican Apertura. In the Liga MX, this team is sitting in fourth place on the list of the richest clubs – its roster value is roughly $80 million.

In comparison, the value of Orlando City’s squad in 2025 is $50 million. Toluca’s most valuable player is their captain, Alexis Vega. The 27-year-old Mexican forward hasn’t been in his best form, though.

He only recorded one assist in the three League Cup games his team has played so far in 2025. Further, the last time he scored a goal for Toluca was back in May.

The good news for Toluca is that Vega’s partner from the attacking line, Paulinho, has been in great shape. With four goals to his name, he’s sharing the top spot on the list of highest-scoring Leagues Cup players (alongside Angel Correa).

Can Orlando City Upset the Odds?

After a slow start of their 2025 Leagues Cup campaign, the boys from Orlando scored 8 goals in the following two games. Then, they scored four against Inter Miami in the MLS.

In that game, Inter Miami had their first-choice goalkeeper Oscar Ustari between the posts, but Orlando City still managed to find the net four times. They did it by creating 21 goal chances (more than twice as many as the Herons). Ustari made eight saves that day, meaning that it could’ve been even worse for Miami.

Obviously, their attack is great, which is no surprise given that their wingers are dribbling maestro Martin Ojeda and fast-paced ex-Dortmund star, Marco Pasalic.

Their defense, however, is questionable. The fact that they allowed at least one goal in every single game they played last month means that they might be in trouble ahead of the Toluca game.

Toluca vs. Orlando City Prediction

We think that this is going to be a banger, with at least a goal on each side. This can easily turn into a goals galore if one team scores early. That said, Both Teams to Score (BTS) seems like a certainty, and the same goes for Over 2.5.

But who’s gonna win and get to play in the 2025 Leagues Cup Semifinal against the winner of the Inter Miami vs. UANL Tigres game? Our prediction is that the game will end in a draw in regulation, so the penalties will decide the victor – and it’s probably going to be Toluca.

Pick: Toluca vs. Orlando City – Draw

Entain Prepared for Potential AUSTRAC Penalties https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/entain-prepared-for-potential-austrac-penalties/ https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/entain-prepared-for-potential-austrac-penalties/#respond Tue, 12 Aug 2025 21:12:35 +0000 https://www.gamblingnews.com/?p=164209 Entain, a global leader in sports betting and gaming, announced its interim results for H1, which ended 30 June 2025, revealing that a recent reorganization has helped it innovate better and is also prepared for potential penalties from Australia’s financial crime watchdog AUSTRAC.

During the earnings call, Entain CEO Stella David directly addressed investor concerns about the ongoing legal issues with the regulator. The company has recorded a AUD 100 million (around $65 million) provision in its accounts related to a potential penalty. However, David clarified that the amount is solely an accounting provision and does not represent a confirmed penalty.

Late last year, AUSTRAC took Entain to court, alleging “serious non-compliance with the country’s anti-money laundering laws.” However, David told investors that the company is currently in the early stages of mediation, and there will be no further updates until those discussions are complete. But for now, the AUD 100 million sits set aside in case they are needed.

Officials Talk About Entain’s UK Tax Risks

Both David and Entain CFO Rob Wood provided clear perspectives on the company’s approach to UK tax risk. David emphasized Entain’s position as a top 20 UK taxpayer, noting that the company’s success should be recognized not only in the UK but also across many other markets.

She cautioned against media speculation regarding potential tax increases, highlighting the risk that such measures could drive players to the unregulated black market. David also stressed the importance of protecting high street jobs, pointing out that Entain employs 14,000 people in the UK and maintains a significant presence on the high street, which is crucial to safeguard.

Entain isn’t the only sports betting and gaming group that’s been cautious ahead of the UK’s upcoming policy changes, as the entire gaming industry is preparing for a potential tax increase.

The Company Is Innovating Following a Recent Restructuring

Entain CTO Satty Bhens explained that a recent reorganization of the company’s product and technology teams has accelerated innovation and enhanced market focus. A crucial innovation is the inclusion of locally based squads dedicated to specific markets. This new structure allows for faster product enhancements, with more than 1,000 code updates deployed in July alone, driven by a modernized, API-first platform and AI-powered automation.

Bhens further emphasized that Entain’s modular platform is built for flexibility and scalability, structured around four independent pillars: gaming, sports betting, marketing, and player accounts. He said these pillars can develop independently without interdependencies. This architecture enables white labeling and cloning, allowing Entain to license its technology to third parties or operate parts of the business independently if needed.

SkyCity Cleared to Keep Casino License in South Australia After Investigation https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/skycity-cleared-to-keep-casino-license-in-south-australia-after-investigation/ https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/skycity-cleared-to-keep-casino-license-in-south-australia-after-investigation/#respond Tue, 12 Aug 2025 21:07:06 +0000 https://www.gamblingnews.com/?p=164207 SkyCity Entertainment has been found suitable to maintain its casino license in South Australia after a thorough independent investigation. The ruling follows earlier concerns about the company’s compliance with anti-money laundering laws and its general management practices.

SkyCity Cleared for Operation

Led by retired Supreme Court judge Brian Martin, the inquiry recognized the substantial progress the company has made since its past failings were brought to light. Judge Martin’s report concluded that, despite previous failings, SkyCity Entertainment has made “genuine” efforts to address its deficiencies. He noted that, had he been asked to assess the suitability of the licensee and SkyCity Entertainment Group (SCEG) as of October 2021, the only possible conclusion would have been that neither was suitable. However, he acknowledged that the circumstances have since changed.

The financial repercussions of the inquiry and resulting penalties have been substantial for SkyCity. The Adelaide Casino has delivered mixed results, contributing to nearly NZD 120 million (about $71.4 million) in tax obligations and anti-money laundering (AML) penalties, along with a NZD 94 million (around $56 million) impairment in its valuation last year.

Investment analysts have cautioned that further enforcement actions could result in additional financial penalties for SkyCity. Forsyth Barr analyst Paul Koraua indicated that a potential $32.5 million penalty may be expected in the 2026 financial year. However, some offset could be provided due to the $39 million improvement program already approved by the commissioner.

The scandal regarding the company’s unpaid obligations also led to several lawsuits. Just last month, eight former SkyCity executives were sued by a shareholder seeking to recover the AU$67 million ($43.56 million USD) penalty the casino operator paid for failing anti-money laundering obligations.

What Happens Next?

In response to the inquiry’s findings, SkyCity has pledged to invest A$60 million (approximately $39 million) over the next three years to improve its systems and management practices. Chief Executive Jason Walbridge acknowledged the company’s past shortcomings, stating that SkyCity accepts the report’s conclusions and apologies for not meeting the required standards. This investment signals the company’s proactive effort to strengthen regulatory compliance and rebuild public trust.

However, despite the generally positive assessment, SkyCity Entertainment still faces ongoing scrutiny. South Australian Liquor and Gambling Commissioner Brett Humphrey emphasized that the report does not amount to a “clean bill of health” for SkyCity Adelaide. He raised serious concerns about the deficiencies and breaches identified during the inquiry, noting that they remain deeply troubling. Consequently, additional regulatory actions, including further penalties, are still being considered.

Oyo Las Vegas Hooters Closes Permanently Due to Financial Troubles https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/oyo-las-vegas-hooters-closes-permanently-due-to-financial-troubles/ https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/oyo-las-vegas-hooters-closes-permanently-due-to-financial-troubles/#respond Tue, 12 Aug 2025 21:03:24 +0000 https://www.gamblingnews.com/?p=164204 Hooters has officially closed its location at Oyo Las Vegas, a hotel situated just east of the Strip on Tropicana Avenue. The closure follows the bankruptcy filing of the chain’s parent company earlier this year, which led to the shutdown of dozens of locations nationwide in June.

Hooters at Oyo Las Vegas Closes

The specific reasons behind the sudden closure of the Las Vegas outlet on Friday remain unclear, especially since it was expected to continue operating. Oyo Las Vegas was formerly known as Hooters Hotel & Casino and was once popular for its $1 minimum blackjack tables. After the property was rebranded in 2019, the Hooters restaurant remained open; however, according to Vital Vegas, its revenue was cut nearly in half in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Despite selling its Las Vegas casino for $135 million in 2019 and shuttering around 40 underperforming locations last year, the chain still struggled to manage its $300 million debt load. According to Bloomberg, Hooters even had to work with a law firm to prepare a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. The company’s downturn has been attributed to declining customer traffic and ongoing financial difficulties.

Patrons Comment on the Closure

Hooters’ Las Vegas venue’s closure still came as a surprise to many, as Sal Melilli, chief executive of Hooters of America, stated that the company’s renowned Hooters restaurants are here to stay. This caught a lot of patrons and regulars off guard, many of whom went on to online forums to express their surprise.

“Loved the wings…..and the atmosphere too,” one customer wrote when reading the news about the restaurant’s closure. “Well. That’s some deflating news,” wrote another.

With the closure of the venue, many people started asking how this would affect Oyo’s Las Vegas property. According to many, the hotel will likely see a large decline in visitors, because Hooters was one of the main attractions of the venue. “How many people do you think went out of their way to go to OYO because of Hooters?” one commenter wrote. “Is there a good Oyo property anywhere in the world?” another criticized the hotel now that it no longer offers Hooters as an option for guests.

“Closing the walkways to it gave that place a death sentence,” one commenter reflected on the reasons why the restaurant was closed. Meanwhile, another stated that they wouldn’t be surprised if Oyo closes and gets bulldozed for employee parking for other upcoming Las Vegas projects and venues.

VGCCC Penalizes QuestBet for “Poor Behavior” https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/vgccc-penalizes-questbet-for-poor-behavior/ https://www.gamblingnews.com/news/vgccc-penalizes-questbet-for-poor-behavior/#respond Tue, 12 Aug 2025 20:58:09 +0000 https://www.gamblingnews.com/?p=164202 The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) announced that it has fined an online bookmaker for “poor behavior.” The sportsbook in question was accused of taking wagers from a customer who was clearly distressed.

QuestBet Allowed a Distressed Customer to Play

According to the VGCCC, QuestBet had allowed a consumer to continue playing despite clear indications of gambling-related stress. The issue was reported by the customer in question, who said that the sportsbook had allowed them to continue betting despite their losing spree. As a result, the player ended up losing a “significant sum of money” in just a few weeks.

The complaint insists that QuestBet never intervened to protect the player from harm.

The VGCCC launched an investigation into the matter and learned that between April and June 2023, the customer had contacted QuestBet over 20 times, requesting additional credits and bonus bets. During 6 of the times the player reached out to the operator, they mentioned that they had accumulated significant losses.

According to the Victorian regulator, this was a clear sign that the player was experiencing gambling-related distress. Instead of intervening, however, QuestBet obliged and granted the customer bonus bets on 5 of the 6 occasions in which they mentioned losses.

QuestBet Did Not Have Sufficient Player Protections in Place

Suzy Neilan, QuestBet’s chief executive officer, understood that QuestBet had allowed the customer to lose about AUD 15,000 over two months. She slammed the operator for its apparent lack of gambling harm minimization protocols and “concerning culture.

Our investigation of QuestBet’s practices found the bookmaker failed to have in place adequate systems to protect individuals identifiable at risk of gambling harm.

Suzy Neilan, CEO, VGCCC

Neilan added that all gambling operators are expected to protect consumers from harm by closely observing their behavior and determining whether there are signs of distress. Not only did QuestBet not do that, but it also failed to issue a formal response to the regulator’s request for an explanation for the lack of care.

Because of QuestBet’s violations, the operator was slammed with an AUD 80,000 penalty for its failures. Neilan noted that this penalty “demonstrates the seriousness of the bookmaker’s failure to meet its legal and moral obligations.”

An in-depth list with the reasons for the VGCCC’s decision is available on the regulator’s official website.

The VGCCC urged consumers to report such instances of non-compliance by contacting the commission either online or via phone. In addition to that, the authority encouraged those affected by gambling to seek Gambler’s Help’s counseling.
