CFL Reinstates Shawn Lemon Following Gambling Scandal Suspension
CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston noted that Lemon has accepted full responsibility for his actions and recognizes the harmful impact wagering can have on sports

The Canadian Football League has reinstated defensive lineman Shawn Lemon after the 36-year-old player was indefinitely suspended in April last year for wagering on CFL games. The reinstatement includes strict conditions, with any further violations of the league’s match-fixing policy resulting in a permanent ban.
Shawn Lemon Reinstated by CFL
CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston emphasized in a statement that maintaining the integrity of on-field competition is a top priority for the league and that violations of the CFL’s match manipulation policy will not be tolerated. He stated that Lemon’s suspension, which is the longest in the league’s history, was both necessary and appropriate.
Johnston noted that Lemon has accepted full responsibility for his actions, recognizes the harmful impact wagering can have on sports, and has taken steps to re-educate himself on league policies. He is now committed to helping fellow players avoid similar mistakes.
Lemon was initially suspended in April 2024 for his involvement in sports betting activities related to CFL games, including one in which he participated. At the time, the league stated that there was no evidence suggesting Lemon’s wagering had affected the outcome of any games, and that Stampeders coaches, teammates, and staff were unaware of his actions.
His suspension came just two weeks after he announced his retirement, which came shortly after helping Montreal defeat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28–24 in the 2023 Grey Cup. He had originally signed a one-year contract with the Alouettes in December 2023, intending to return for a 14th CFL season.
What Happens Now?
Lemon is eligible to return to active play, but he won’t be able to do it immediately. Lemon is still required to serve a two-game suspension for violating the league’s drug policy after testing positive for Phentermine, a banned appetite suppressant. He must also complete all mandatory league education programs, including those related to the CFL’s match manipulation policy, and continue participating in the counseling sessions he has already been attending.
Alouettes head coach Jason Maas declined to comment in detail on Shawn Lemon’s current status, stating that the veteran defensive end is not officially part of the team at this time. Maas described Lemon as a high-impact player and a respected presence within the team environment. According to Maas, Lemon has consistently been a positive influence in the locker room and has made a strong impression during his time with the organization.
