Number of Canadian Travelers to the US Slumps Again
Canadian and American economies are hurting, with the US tipped to bear the brunt, but is it worth it?

The number of people traveling to the United States from Canada has dropped another month, with a 22.1% drop year-over-year, according to Statistics Canada. As President Donald Trump continues to threaten neighbors with stiff tariffs, anti-American sentiment has been mounting in Canucks, many of whom have chosen not to take the summer trip down south.
New Tariff Talks Sour the Mood for Canadian Travelers
Canadians have not taken kindly to the first bout of tariff saber-rattling, with many choosing not to visit Las Vegas, Nevada, and other popular tourist destinations. Business trips have also been going down, and now, Trump is back at it again, threatening to slap new 35% tariffs.
All of this has contributed to Canadians choosing to stay at home and traveling abroad, dropping by 33.1% in June alone. Canadians visited the United States 39 million times in 2024, and 75% of all Canadians travel abroad, mostly to the United States.
While this doesn’t bode well for the United States’ most popular traveling destinations, Americans have also chosen not to take the trip up north. Travel to Canada is down 10% as well, citing data by Statscan.
The exact economic repercussions are difficult to gauge in the real world, but the US Travel Association already hazarded a guess in February that as many as 14,000 jobs could be on the line along with $2.1 billion in unrealized economic value if Canadian travelers slumped by as merely as 10%.
You Shun Me, I Shun You
Despite these sobering realities, however, most Canadians – around 75% of them – are choosing to shun the United States by either cancelling or reconsidering their travels to their southern neighbor.
Of course, refusing to take the trip down south is also hurting Canadian businesses, such as airlines, who depend on these trips happening in the first place.
In the great tit-for-tat exchange, there are no real winners. Yet, Canadians seem right to teach President Trump a valuable lesson – you can’t make a deal if the other party isn’t looking for one.
